Not-so-Social

Early age communication takes a lot of time and to deliver a message from one location to another. Codes were used earlier; these codes have to be translated before printed. Sometimes in sending a message, you have to pay by letter or its words. Isn’t it too much hassle? It was a great relief to mankind when like humans do, technology evolved. Just a click and poof, there goes your message. Less effort, less time and inexpensive.

Gadgets were created to be more efficient to the people using it. Communication is now literally at your hand. Instead, some people are using it in a bad way. God gifted us with brains to think and decide how to live a healthy life but without even knowing, we are living an unhealthy life. Example, school is just a 10 minute walk from home however you chose to transport. Children nowadays spend more time at home staring at their gadget’s screen rather than exercising their bodies by playing with other kids while having fun.

Social relationship is also affected by this. When waiting for a bus to arrive you can see people busy with their cellphones or tablets, some using their earphones. It’s disturbing to watch since these people can rather talk with each other. On social sites, we add someone and just like that they become your friend when in fact sometimes, you haven’t met or know that person. Some people think that their popularity is based on how many friends they have on facebook or followers they have on twitter but this is untrue. How can you even be friends with them if you don’t know who that person is? It is also easier to have a conversation to someone on texts or chats. Technology has slowly eased its way into our lives and formed glass walls between individuals who can communicate with each other but instead chose not to.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, officially recorded as Republic Act No. 10175, is a law in the Philippines approved on the 12th of September 2012. It aims to address legal issues concerning online interactions and the internet in the Philippines. Among the cybercrime offenses included in the bill are cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and libel. This was due to the fact that cybercrime's rate is increasing year after year. Because sending messages are now considered as one click away, so are the hate words against you. More crimes are committed online and there is not, yet, a strong force that stops this actions.

We just need to remember that technology  is invented for the better of its users, not for its worst. So when your digital devices are taking up too much of your life, it is time to switch it off and enjoy life unplugged.
